The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management - National Research Institute (IMGW-PIB) is a Polish research-development unit created on the basis of the decree no. 338/72 issued by the Council of Ministers on 30 December 1972 on merging the State Hydrological and Meteorological Institute with the Institute of Water Management. IMGW-PIB operates on the basis of the act dated 25 July 1985 concerning research-development units. The Institute is supervised by the Minister for Environment. Basic statutory tasks of the Institute include scientific and development activities as well as state services in the domains: meteorology, hydrology, oceanology, water management and engineering, water resources quality, wastewater management.

PERUN Lightning detection and localization network
The IMGW-PIB lightning location and detection network, called PERUN, has started an operational work at beginning 2002. At first the PERUN system was composed of the CPU (Central Processor Unit), infrastructure, user software and nine sensors (SAFIR 3000 type manufactured by VAISALA) located throughout the country. The average distance between stations (baseline) was about 200 km. The sensors were installed at different heights between 14 to 80 m above ground level. Data transmission was via a WAN.

The sensor is a set of antenna arrays designed to measure electromagnetic wave created when lightning strikes using interferometric and time of arrival techniques. Two types of lightning discharges: cloud-to-ground (CG) (in low frequency /LF/ band ) and intracloud (IC) (in very high frequency /VHF/ band ) are detected.

In order to increase efficiency and detection accuracy and to achieve homogenous characteristics on Polish territory, since 2011 the PERUN network is in constant development: upgrade of CPU, sensors type upgrade and addition of sensors in new locations. At present lightning detection network in Poland consist of TLP ver 1.1.8 (Total Lightning Processor), 8 sensors TLS200 (Total Lightning Sensor) type and 4 Safir 3000 type. The PERUN system enables: monitoring of the total lightning activity (IC and CG), storm cell tracking and monitoring of the discharge density (number of lightning per area).
