The BLDN consists of 6 sensors strategically placed throughout Benelux with one just over the
border from Luxembourg in France for seamless and complete lightning strike information around the borders.
There are 4 LPATS sensors and 2 IMPACT ES sensors. All real-time and archived lightning information is handled
in the BLDN control center and made available through
http://www.blids.de, as well as other conventional data delivery means.
A new internet service is on its way to start this summer.
Vaisala is the largest manufacturer and system integrator of lightning detection and location equipment and services in the world. Vaisala owns the BLDN and BLIDS, the German Center for lightning detection; a department at Siemens AG is operating the BLDN. Siemens is integrating the Sensor Information from different sensors in France and Germany. Vaisala currently manufactures and distributes a comprehensive line of lightning detection systems and application tools. These range from simple, single-sensor devices used to monitor local and regional lightning phenomena, to fully deployed national networks that reliably and automatically measure a full range of lightning parameters, producing a vibrant set of data products to a wide variety of users.
