ALDIS was established in 1991 as cooperation project between the Austrian Electrotechnical Association (OVE), Verbund, Austria's leading electricity supplier. Since 1995 Siemens AG Austria is participating in the ALDIS project.

ALDIS operates a network of 8 IMPACT sensors in Austria and lightning data services are provided to national meteorological institutes, power utilities, insurance companies and some other lightning sensitive customers.

From the very beginning ALDIS was much interested in the performance evaluation of lightning location systems and ALDIS has developed over the years to a well established lightning research institution. Research results were presented at various scientific conferences and several papers in reviewed literature have been published.

Since 1998 ALDIS operates an instrumented tower on Gaisberg near the city of Salzburg, where lightning current is directly measured. This tower is struck by lightning on average 40-60 times a year. Measured lightning data are a perfect reference to verify the performance of a lightning location system. Precise time, location and peak current are known for the lightning strikes to the tower and they can be compared straight forward with the correlated data provided by the location system.

The long term experience of the ALDIS team in performance evaluation of lightning location systems was acknowledged by the EUCLID members by assigning the task of network quality control to the ALDIS team.
