State Meteorological Agency of Spain (AEMET)

AEMET, the State Meteorological Agency, is the National Meteorological Service of Spain. Its basic aim is to protect life and property by accurately forecasting and monitoring adverse weather phenomena and to support social and economic activities in Spain by providing quality meteorological and climate services.
AEMET has an important focus towards international cooperation for weather and climate issues, both in the European context and towards the development of other National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, especially in Ibero America and West Africa.

AEMET Lightning Detection System

AEMET is operating a network of lightning detectors since early 1990s. Since then, the system has been updated several times both at detectors level and at control and information exploitation level. At present, the network comprises 20 detectors of VAISALA technology; 15 of then are deployed in mainland Spain and Balearic Islands and the other 5 in the Canary Islands. The system provides a complete national coverage which is further enhanced and reinforced by the real time exchange of raw detection reports with the networks operated in France and in Portugal.
